We carry out research and development programs; consultancy, training, and international cooperation activities in DNA technology and molecular systematics to promote the conservation and sustainable uses of genetic resources. Research in our laboratory focuses on the following areas:
Analysis of genomic sequence data from human and other species to study the structure and function of genes, evolutionary changes among organisms, and biodiversity
Development and deployment of DNA molecular and barcode methods to enable identification of species (particularly rare and endangered ones in Vietnam) and monitoring raw materials of genetic resource based products for the purposes of commercialization (e.g. safe production of foodstuffs and pharmaceuticals), conservation, facilitating access to genetic resources
Studying molecular mechanisms and genomic stability in cells and genetically modified organisms

Education and Experience
At the Institute of Genome Research, Hien is a senior researcher and Head of Genome Diversity Laboratory. From 1995 to 2012, Hien worked as a researcher at the Institute of Biotechnology (IBT), Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST). She earned her Ph.D. from IBT in 2003 and served as a Deputy Head of the Applied DNA Technology Laboratory (2006-2012). In 2000-2001, she worked as an intellectual property program associate with ISAAA and then with SWITT at Cornell University, New York, USA. In 2008-2009, she worked as a postdoctoral fellow (VEF and PIPRA co-sponsors) on interdisciplinary activities at PIPRA, Department of Plant Science, University of California at Davis, USA. These positions allowed her to gain knowledge and skills in biotechnology, biosafety and intellectual property management. Since then, she has been involved actively in many activities related to these fields in Vietnam research and educational institutions. She is an affiliate lecturer at Hanoi National University. She also teaches courses at the graduate school of the Institute of Ecology and Biological Resources
